Nutrition Security programs generally focus on broader food access and quality issues at the community level. In contrast to Food is Medicine, they don’t include a prescribed approach through a healthcare provider and access to specific measurable medical outcomes. There is significant overlap, however, in that nutrition security programs focus on providing healthy food access to improve the well-being of vulnerable populations.
LCS strengthens healthy food access in Wilmington and New Castle County by serving as a trusted provider of fresh, high-quality groceries to a range of community-led nutrition programs. From emergency food pantries to wellness-focused partnerships, LCS ensures that individuals and families have consistent access to the ingredients they need to thrive.

Nourish is a nutrition program tailored for individuals living with Sickle Cell Disease (SCD). Modeled after some aspect of the the Delaware Food Farmacy, this initiative delivers weekly medically tailored groceries to support symptom management, reduce hospitalizations, and improve quality of life.
Patients are referred through a local nonprofit, The Healing Tree, an utilizes faith-based volunteer food coaches to help clients with nutrition and culinary education.

Through The Healing Tree partnership, Nourish integrates food access with holistic care, meeting participants with compassion and resources that promote both physical and emotional healing.
LCS serves as the trusted food provider for Nourish, ensuring each patient receives high-quality, fresh ingredients that are essential to their ongoing care.
Lettuce is LCS’s school-based food access initiative, currently operating in three Delaware Schools, The Bayard School, Stubbs Early Education Center, and Harlan Elementary School, to ensure students and their families have reliable access to healthy groceries right where they learn. These in-school pantries provide:
At Bayard School, Lettuce goes a step further, pairing food access with on-site nutrition education. In partnership with ChristianaCare and the University of Delaware Cooperative Extension. Families receive interactive classes and hands-on learning that promote long-term healthy eating habits.
This integrated approach empowers families with both the food and knowledge needed to support better health outcomes starting from childhood.
