Our Delaware Quitline Outreach team works hard to bring resources to those trying to quit tobacco. One such patient recently gave their account of how the Delaware Quitline helped them on their journey, and what they would say to anyone trying to quit.
How the Delaware Quitline Helped Me
Quitting smoking was one of the most rewarding decisions I have ever made. Since age 14, cigarettes had been a constant companion, a crutch during stressful times, and a habit I thought I could never break.
However, a good friend of mine gave me a true wake up call. She had quit smoking for the sake of her children. She still allowed me to smoke in her house when it was raining or cold outside. During the beginning of my bachelor’s degree studies that friend said to me, “You need to quit smoking, because coming soon you will not be smoking in my house.” Of course, I thought she was kidding as I jokingly replied to her, “As soon as I graduate with my Bachelors.” Reflecting on that conversation now, I realize I spoke to her as though I would never reach that point, given all the constant obstacles in my way. Today, eighteen years later, due to determination, support, and the right resources—specifically Chatiquix and the Delaware Quit Line along with my Primary Care Provider (PCP) and his medical assistant, who were both very knowledgeable, I found the path to a healthier, smoke-free life.
I began smoking at 14, influenced by my older brother and wanting to seem cool. Over time, it became part of my daily routine, and quitting felt impossible. I had quit cold turkey once due to a brain hemorrhage and stroke. I kept a pack of cigarettes in my glove box as a safety blanket. However, when my car was stolen; so was that pack of cigarettes I was using as a safety blanket. That event in turn caused panic which caused me to secretly start smoking at work. Until the following Christmas when there was a blow up causing me to take a cigarette from my husband and smoke in front of him, which I was trying to avoid so I would not start smoking again. Since the secret was out of the bag, I started to smoke again. Not long after I divorced to live healthier stress-free lifestyle, January 2000. However, that friend saying what she did(in2006) really had my wheels turning in my brain. I reached out to my PCP and asked for help. He recommended Chantix and said they will run it through insurance before giving me a prescription. Sadly, insurance did not cover it.
Graduation Day was here! I was getting ready to leave and took a seat on my patio bench to smoke a cigarette, hoping it would ease my stress; but unsurprisingly, that smoke did not offer any relief, it did not feel like a weight was being lifted off my shoulders like it usually did when I lit up one. The sign came, as if the Smoking Angel sat on my lap to tell me my smoking days are over sweetheart. It was time to keep my promise to my friend. When my PCP’s office called to inform me that insurance would not cover the Chatiquix they had said that I should call the Delaware Help line to see if they could help me get it covered.
I called the given number and scheduled weekly calls to discuss my issues and stressors. I was assured that support would be there whenever I wanted to speak with someone. My doctor's medical assistant advised me to eat before taking my morning medication. I started the medication in which I had to continue smoking while taking it. After the first two – three days the smoking was making me sick to my stomach. I called my PCP first and asked If I must keep taking this medicine. I received a hard, “YES.” So, I followed up with the helpline check in and again received the hard, “Yes.”
In 2007 Chatiquix helped me break down my quitting process into manageable steps. It reminded me to celebrate small victories, distracted me during cravings.
Alongside Chatiquix, I had the Delaware Quit Line expert advice. The counselors at the Quit Line were understanding and knowledgeable. They offered me a customized quit plan, sent me informational materials, and checked in regularly to monitor my progress. We scheduled check ins that fit my hectic single mom college student and work schedule.
What set the Delaware Quit Line apart was their genuine care and accessibility. Having someone to talk to during difficult moments makes a significant difference. The counselors were always on time for their calls. Not one call was a minute late or early.
After weeks of hard work and persistence, I finally quit smoking. My health improved, and I felt more energetic and confident. Especially after being able to go to the gym and not having a craving for nicotine. Chantix continued to be used while the Help Line continued to check in on me, and the Delaware Quit Line celebrated my milestones, reinforcing my achievement. I am proud to say that I am now 18 years smoke-free and can honestly say that these resources were instrumental in my success. I have been to parties or wine tastings where my friends smoke. When someone is under the influence, they do not always make the best choices; I have tried a puff now and then and later wished I had not. Because I became sick to my stomach. Even today walking by a stranger smoking the smell of smoke causes me to become nauseous. I like that I become nauseous; that is my security blanket today.
Like my friend, my brother was able to quit cold turkey. So, remember everyone’s journey is different. What worked for me may not work for you, But The Delaware QuitLine has the best advice to help you manage your journey to quit smoking tobacco.

When I quit, I was able to think more clearly, my breathing became better, and I was able to go to the gym more causing me to get into shape. Which helped me start eating healthier. It opened me up to more social activities.
