When Kimberly learned she was expecting her second child, she knew she would need to find a way to support her family.

Kimberly is a consummate caregiver, a single mom for her 7-year-old son and works as a Nursing Assistant. She was unable to continue working in her secondary job as a delivery person due to her pregnancy. And while she has the support of her mother and sister, Kimberly felt she should be able to do everything on her own.

“My first thought was how am I gonna be able to work through this. I’m a prideful person so I thought I should be able to do it myself and didn’t want to ask for help.”

Kimberley first turned to food stamps but was discouraged by the lengthy and confusing application process. It was a doctor at ChristianaCare who recommended her for the Women’s Health Program of the Delaware Food Farmacy.

“They said it was food for moms. I applied not thinking I’d get it, but a couple of weeks later I got a call sayin I was in!”

The Farmacy was able to provide her with healthy vegetables, fruits, and proteins to support both her pregnancy and her family.  Christiana Community Health Worker, Jessica Mora-Martinez, also provided coaching, cooking tips, and medical monitoring to ensure Kimberly’s pregnancy went smoothly.

“It just helps so much, having the food like this. And I feel like I can take a breath and focus on my job and my son.”

Kimberly wanted to share her story with those facing a similar situation and give them the courage to accept help when it was offered. She helped kick off the Hiller Harvest, a food drive conducted by Tower Hill School. The drive on average provides over $7,000 in food for Thanksgiving care packages to families in need.

“I can’t thank you all enough. Jenn, and Jess, and everyone was so nice. And I can’t believe that you all could help me like you have.”

Kimberly will graduate from the Delaware Food Farmacy this January.
