For Theresa, a single grandparent of two, COVID-19 led to major changes within her family. When school closures went from two weeks to much longer, she worried about childcare. Unable to leave her 12 year-old grandchild alone, Theresa had to quit work to care for her family. Left without an income, she struggled to pay the rent to avoid losing their home.

“After fighting with myself about NEEDING the help, I began to look and it seemed as though there were no funds available or maybe just didn’t have the right resources until I was told about LCS.”

Our emergency financial services aim to help families stay together through the unexpected. The COVID-19 pandemic threw many more people into situations they never imagined. LCS continued to serve throughout it all.

“Mrs. Washington was able to take control of the situation while never making me feel like I was inhumane for needing the help. I truly appreciate her for her patience.  LCS truly was a blessing during a time of need.”

Emergency financial assistance is available to all legal residents of Delaware. Individuals provide applicant information, household income documentation, information about household members, a monthly budget, and a statement of need. The process takes between a couple of days and several weeks, depending on how quickly the applicant responds to questions and provides the required documents. LCS sends checks directly to the landlord or utility company.

“A hand up feels great!! I’d like to thank your agency and Mrs. Washington for making the impossible possible!!! Not only did I receive help for my delinquent rent, but I was given a few extra months of help allowing me to get the school situated and to find other employment. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!”

It takes courage to ask for help, even though we all need it in some form at some time.  We at LCS are blessed to be allowed to connect individuals and families to resources.  Thank you for letting us serve you!
